The John W. Olver Design Building at UMass Amherst is a state-of-the-art facility that brings together the Architecture, Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning, and Building & Construction Technology programs in one facility to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, research, and learning.

The building, completed in January 2017, is one of the most advanced mass timber projects in the U.S., with a unique cross-laminated timber (CLT) structural system.

The BESISTA® Tension rod system played a crucial role in the construction of this building. It includes tension rods, rod anchors, pins and locking rings, cover and extension sleeves, circular discs, angle and cross anchors, and couplers.

In the specific case of the John W. Olver Design Building, the BESISTA® Tension rod system was utilized to support the rooftop garden. The building features a roof garden at the upper level, which is upheld by a long-span wood-steel truss system, often referred to as a “zipper” truss. This truss system is exposed in the atrium below, adding to the aesthetic appeal of the building.

The innovative use of the BESISTA® Tension rod system not only provides essential structural support but also contributes to the building’s aesthetic appeal and its commitment to sustainability. This is a testament to the versatility and effectiveness of the BESISTA® Tension rod system in modern construction projects. It’s a great example of how engineering and architecture can come together to create beautiful, functional, and sustainable structures.
